Tour of the Borderlands

Post by RedRoxx44 »

I am not posting this as an event as I am not a very good planner, trip leader. Aug 18th or 25th, both Sat, I plan to do my annual inspection of the grave markers at the 10th Cav gravesite area off the Ruby Road/ Nogales area. Anyone who would like to join me in their own vehicle is welcome. You will need a HC vehicle with a good spare tire, don't think you'll need 4wd unless we really get off the beaten path.

What might you see--- great scenery, should be very green and possible water crossings, depending on weather. Usually not a lot of traffic. Might see Border Patrol, some tourists, some illegals, some drug dealers ( unlikely as they do not like to be seen), some hippies, and bird watchers ( which might be drug related lookouts or transporters), ranchers.

There is a lot of off trail short hikes here, there are old mines, graveyards, ranch remains, historical stuff. I will probably not be leading any excursions into Mexico. On trail hikes are the Atascosa summit and established route in Sycamore canyon.

Depending if anyone joins me and the interest I can come up with some activities for the day, peak bagging or canyon scrambling or just bumming around. Bring some lights if you want to get underground.

FYI, this area can have lots of ticks this time of year, and some nasty stinging nettle in places. If you bring Fido bring a good comb to check for him/ her and maybe yourself.

PM me if interested. The likely meet up will be the small FS campground near Pena Blanca lake.

Wow, sounds awesome!
Funny you should mention the birder/smuggler connection, I was just told an entertaining tale by a serious birder who recently got his "life drug smugglers" right about where you're going! He told the guys (in Spanish) "hey we don't care what you're doing, we're just here to look at the birds" - which I thought was smart, as well as true ... one of the guys answered back (in English) "okay, thanks" or "ok, cool", something like that.

Well, nobody wants to hike with me, not that I blame them. Heading out in a few minutes, High temps Nogales predicted at 82 degrees 50% chance of t storms. Got spanked down here last night. Should be awesome in several places as to water, hopefully not too much flooding on the road to get there.

Enjoy your tour, but I think people might lean away from hiking with you since you feel the need to freely share the intimate details of your personal life. Not there is anything wrong with that.

Just a thought.

Why this time of year? Do you ever do this in the winter? Tax season is such an interruption for me. I've been to other 10th Cav sites and would love to see this. Looking forward to your triplog and might try it.

Already been for this year. I am down here now because it is incredibly beautiful with the rains and usually no traffic.

Agreed. I was down there one time in summer when my kids were little. We even found random places to swim, off the Ruby Road.
