Early NOBO January Start

Post by WinterGhost »

Looking to start my first AZT hike in early January NOBO.
Looking to end near the Mogollon Rim. SOBO to Rim next fall.
Does it make sense to hike some or all of the AZT Bike Trail to avoid snowy peaks.
Is this allowed?, reasonable? I suck at altitude anyhow.
Water availability better in January?
Coming in from Florida.
Have always been a winter hiker in the Northeast. All snow.

Why would it not be allowed? All mountain bike trails in Arizona allow hiking.

@azbackpackr

Wish Guthooks showed the bike and hike trail together.
Or- is there anything that does?

@WinterGhost
Have you checked with the ATA?

If its a low snow season, the regular AZT should be doable.

I am 70 in December. I have been thinking about doing the southern section of the AZT starting in Feb and go as far as I can. I hope this is a wet winter for this area. When the water is in the Creeks southern AZ is fine hiking.
