Tanzania wants to boost tourist numbers by putting a cable car on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, and is in talks about the project with a Chinese and a Western company.
Around 50,000 tourists climb Kilimanjaro annually. A cable car could increase tourist numbers by 50 percent by providing access to the mountain for those unable to climb it, Constantine Kanyasu, the deputy minister for tourism, said.
The country is conducting feasibility studies on possible routes at the moment, Kanyasu told Reuters.
On the list of the world's "must do/visit" locations, Kilimanjaro ain't on mine. That said, I've already pre-ordered my tickets on the first tram-ride to Choquequirao if/when it ever gets built. Begs the question, "Why on God's earth would someone hike for a couple of days UPHILL, when they can tram it in comfort in a mere 15 minutes?". Makes no sense to moi.
Africa was so awesome. You guys would probably go there just to drink the banana beer, but the hiking, the landscape, the people (minus those pesky kidnappers), and the wildlife was amazing.
