Need some N. Rim day hiking advice

Post by montezumawell »

This topic was originally entitled 'North Rim Open May 10' but we changed it to its currernt title when we realized we will be able to go there ourselves on or shortly after May 10. We checked the TrailDEX and didn't find anything specific regarding the N. Rim's day hike opportunities. We couldn't get through to the NPS site. Thybony's small book suggests hiking down to Roaring Springs on the North Kaibab, a RT of 9.4 miles and a 3K' elevation loss/gain. We know next to nothing about the N. Rim. We've camped out on those Western Points in the Kaibab NF and hiked some of the Rainbow Rim Trail but, as far as day hiking inside the park itself, we're more or less clueless. Anyway, the Roaring Springs day hike sounds pretty much comparable to the Indian Gardens RT hike on the South Rim. We'd sure like to hear from people who have gone to the N. Rim for day hiking. What did you think of the rim trails as well? How does the AzT interface with the NPS property? Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks!

The Widforss Trail is a great hike along the North Rim! It starts off of a dirt road a short ways north of the village at the north rim, not far from the N. Kaibab trailhead. The first part of the trail goes along the northern rim of the Transept. After that it makes it's way south to Widforss Point, which is one of the better viewpoints on the North Rim. I'd highly recommend it and rate it moderate. The round-trip distance is about 10 miles, but there's very little up and down involved. Here's a link to check out, ( dead link removed )
