Grapevine? Trail information request

Post by justind145 »

Hi all, I am requesting any information you all may have on a hike I have heard of on various grand canyon websites known as the grapevine loop. From what I have read this consists of the Grandview to Horseshoe Mesa then catching the Tonto and going westward to the South Kaibab (or bright angel). Is this the correct itinerary for that loop? Anyone have any information/experience from it? I am a large fan of the canyon and want to start moving off into more of the threshold and primitive zones and this seems like a good entry into that sort of thing.

I was going to do that loop in reverse last February, but came down with a cold the week of, good thing because that was the same week the Grandview trail got washed out.

Yes your correct that it goes from Grandview to S. Kaibab or vise-versa.

A friend of mine did this hike earlier this year, here is a link to his trip report.

In response to justind145's reply:

I did the loop that you're planning about 1.5 yrs. ago, heading down the EAST side of H/S Mesa past Miner's then around in "front" of H/S Mesa over to the S.K. & out. I'd recommend that you plan for at least 4-5 days (although it's "do-able" in 3 or less) so as to allow for ample exploration of the various side canyons, etc.

did a hike from hermits rest to new hance t.h. along the tonto in early may and the section your talking about is spectacular and the possibilities for exploration are great. my biggest concern would be water.no problem last spring because of the wet winter. was in the canyon a month ago down on the escalante rt. and everything was dry. so check w/rangers and any body coming the opposite direction on the water situation. other wise have a fantastic trip.
