prospect/mine?

Post by slacker »

Does anyone have coordinates for the mine on this trail. I've hiked it twice and haven't been able to spot the redish rock indicating the entrance.

Thanks

There's a small one on the Duthman's Trail right after attaining the first big ridge on your left (west side). There used to be an old mustard jar there with the old claim for the "Poor Folks" mine. I'm not sure if it's still there or not though.

You can see it if you take the Bluff Springs Trail up cardiac hill. Once you get to the top, and start around the hill, it'll be on your right. The mine is on the South West side of the mountain on the opposite side of Barks Canyon. It's a small hole with red tailings extending down into the canyon. It's not far from where the Canyon meets the basin. Here are a couple of pictures from the Dutchman Trail. One is a view of Miners Needle from the trail, just before it goes down into the basin, and the other is looking North to the mine from the same spot. If you decide to take the Bluff Springs trail, just keep looking to your right as you get up near the top. Can't miss the mine from up there.

Hiking up or down Barks Canyon will not reveal this mine which is on the east side of the wash. Approach it from the south by walking parallel to and above the wash. You can't miss the tailings pile unless your a real greenhorne to Arizona.

There is also a prospect above it but it goes nowhere. Guided a photographer to this mine years ago and there was a dead dried up javalina laying near the end of the mine tunnel. There are no shafts to look out for but there usually are bats in the mine.

Be careful out there. Don't use the light from your cell phone or a propane lighters when you explore old mines. Go prepared with multiple lights and don't go alone!
