Any good West Rim Grand Canyon short day hikes?

Post by lisajere »

we are going in the beginning of November this year and I will have my hubby and two boys with me. We will be making a day trip out from Vegas. I need any advice on short day hikes (my hubby is not so athletically inclined) and my boys are under 12 years old. I do however want them to see the beauty of the grand canyon as I discovered it last year. Any suggestions? All welcome. Thanks.

Sounds like you should stick to the "Corridor Trails". They are better developed & maintained. Look at Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab Trail. Bright Angel has water & rest houses. Both have mules on the trails which results in a few puddles. Maybe go down Bright Angel to the 1.5 mile rest house (3 mile RT) or the 3 mile rest house (6 mile RT). Keep in mind it's easier going down. However much time it takes you to go down, it will take 1.5 to 2 times as long to hike out. So 1/2 hour to the 1.5 mile rest house means 45 minutes back out.

The trails can be icy in the morning. The GC Village Store has "in-step" crampons that you can rent.
Anybody can make a hike harder. The real skill comes in making the hike easier.

I would even waist your time going to the Western Grand Canyon. Al is right, you need to come into the National Park ( a longer drive) to do any worthwhile hiking (or viewing IMO).

Thanks for the advice. We did end up going to the South Rim and hiked a short distance down the Bright Angel Trail. So worth the drive! My favorite place in the world.
