I have wanted to hike Picacho Peak for some time, but would like to know a few things ahead of time so that I'm prepared. How difficult is this hike compared to say...hiking Camelback Mtn Echo Canyon trail??? Are gloves recommended??? How long does the hike take for someone who hikes Camelback easily??? I've searched the web and found some info. but thought I'd seek advice from a fellow Hike AZ hiker.... Info./advice appreciated.

Re: Picacho Peak
Go for it! Picacho Peak is a great hike! Assuming you hike Camelback via Echo Canyon, I'd say it would take you slightly more than twice as long to reach the summit of Picacho Peak. The difficulty is about the same or maybe a bit easier. You could bring gloves for the cable section; I don't think they are necessary but you never know if a splinter of metal is going to come off those things. Also, in case the cable section sounds scary....it's not. You'll hike on the "inside" of the cables; they are basically just a handrail. They comprise just a short section of the hike towards the top; only cause it's kinda rocky in that section.
I'd plan on 3-4 hours for the hike depending on how long you spend on top. Have fun!

Re: Picacho Peak
I'll second the Hoffmaster. It should take about twice as long as Camelback and bring gloves just in case. The steep areas have cables so there's nothing technical to worry about. There's a parking fee so bring $6 for that. After you hike Picacho you'll be ready for the Flatiron.

Re: Picacho Peak
Ditto Matt's & Wally's comments.
I've hiked to the top with my daughter every year on her birthday, starting with her 5th, and will again next month on her 18th!
I've seen folks as 'experienced' as 85 years old on top; so, I guess if you are between 5 and 85 you should be good-to-go!
