going to yellowstone for a week, flying to salt lake city and driving the rest, i want to do a backpacking trip that involves maybe a base camp than day hikes, the plan is still in the air, hopefully i can get some ideas from this site. if anyone wants to join, i will be by myself and welcome anyone up for a week in the woods. the plan is not yet set, so if you are intrested we can work it out or if you have done a trip there i would love some beta

I did a series of short dayhikes, so I can't really tell you about backpacking in Yellowstone. I posted some photos of these dayhikes on my flickr.com account.
For short dayhikes, I really enjoyed
Upper Geyser Basin
Artists Paint Pots
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone lower falls.

I don't know what you have to do to get Backcountry Permits.
For Backpacking these all look good but I've never done any of them:
Bechler River
Chain of Lakes
Heart Lake
The Thorofare
Two Ocean Plateau
The Gallatin Skyline
The Hellroaring

For my money, I would go to Grand Teton National Park and look at these
Moose Basin Divide
The Grand Teton Loop
The Teton Crest

I did a dayhike from Jenny Lake to Lake Solitude. I posted some photos of this hike. I talked with some backpackers heading to Hurricane Ridge. The whole area is awesome. I also did a trailride south of Jackson Hole down by Bondurant. Great cowboy country. And fly-fishing the Snake River for Snake River fine-speckled cutthroat trout.

Back country permits are very easy to obtain in yellowstone, and typically no reservation is required, just get there early!

A couple great backpack trips are the hellroaring (although it will take you out of the park), Shoshone Lake, and bechler river

Shosone lake is an amazing place, animal sightings will not be as common as in other sections of the park, but you will hike throught a geyser basin with very active geysers, and are free to explore as close as you dare

Bechler is a great place, earlier in the year it can be pretty hot, but this time of the year I think it would be great weather

this is what i came up with as of now:
get permit at south entrance ranger station
heart lake trail head to 8j6 (11.7) first night
night 2 at 5l2 monument camp (9.2)
night 3 either 6m4 or 6m3 (12) and if feeling really good 6m7 fox creek(14.9 to fox)
night 4 8c5 snake river (11.2 from 6m7)
night 5 at 8h3 hideaway (~8 miles)
and ~9 miles back to trail head

i hoope the days are long enough for these type of miles. the elevation is between 7 and 10 grand with only one real big climb. this is my plan as of now i am going to call the ranger station and see if this is really do-able

yellowstone is great, one of the best places i have ever hiked, my trip got changed because the road was closed due to snow on the first two days i was there, i did some day trips - fairy creek trail and pelican creek valley and gerbe lake. i then did the heart lake loop ~ 33 miles. it was great, the snow was awesome and i had everything to my self, not many other hikers. i saw 2 grizzlies with a near attack by one because he was protecting a carcuse, a pack of wolves surrounded me and i also saw many elk and bison, a deer and 5 bald eagles. i will post some pic later
