Mohawk Mountains

Post by hippiepunkpirate »

Every time I drive Interstate 8, the Mohawk Mountains are always the landform that draw most of my interest. It's a relatively desolate area, but does anyone know of any trails/hikes in the Mohawk range?

That area is within the Barry Goldwater Range, so you need to get the permit to enter. I doubt if there are any actual hiking trails.

I am spending the winter in Yuma again, and will be hiking mostly in the Gila Mtns. Even though close to a city, there are few trails. They are very rugged and steep, but there are canyons that are relatively easy to hike up. Jester's Peak does have a trail up it, though. I also will be visiting the Muggins Mtns., plus Kofa and Castle Dome areas.

There is a book that has at least some info about SW Arizona. Exploring Arizona's Wild Areas, by Scott S. Warren.

Ask RedRoxx, also.

I'll check out that book, thanks!

Usually RedRoxx would jump in on a topic like this one. Letty, where are you?

Don't know much about it. No trails in that area. i used to drive I-8 frequently and was also drawn to that area. You might also try summitpost; a guy over there seems to specialized in bagging peaks in that area.

If you ever head out there, let me know. My mission this winter is to hit up as much desert west of Phoenix as I can. Just not until December; I'll probably be wrapped up in fall colors for the next month or so :)

I'll probably try to get a hiking event together as I don't have much experience in off-trail scenarios, especially down that low. Maybe January or February...I want to do Flatiron first!
