Winter Day Hike Suggestions?

Post by kjschaal »

A friend from Indiana is coming into town next weekend, and I have promised to take him hiking. Right now, I am considering Flat Iron or maybe Brown's Peak. I think these are both winners. Any other suggestions? We are both in good shape, and are looking for a challenging, scenic, memorable experience; but we only have one day. What do you think?

Lower LaBarge Box Loop. Not a peak-bag, but certainly memorable.

Ya do something in the middle of the Supes so he can get a feel for all (well most) of the scenescapes out there. Lower LaBarge isn't bad......perhaps mix Battleship Mountain into it, at least the lower flat half. Such great views of that part of the Supes up there.

Picacho Peak is a personal favorite of mine, it just feels so adventurous when your climbing up the wires and walking on the plank.
Anything in the supes would be great too, Flatiron, Superstition Peak 5057, Battleship Mountain. Those are all good challenging peak bags.

You may want to try a wilderness area seldom visited called Bulldog Canyon. It is just east of Needle Vista on US 60 towards Superior. exploration is the name in stream bed or peaks. be sure to mark where you enter the stream bed. you can easily get lost.

1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Pusch Peak is closed at this time of year for the lambing season. Not sure there are any sheep left, but they still close it, I've heard.
2. Pusch Peak is in Tucson, not near where they are going to be.
3. Pusch Peak is most likely not the best beginner hike for people from out of town.
4. Pusch Peak has a bird's eye view of the worst of Tucson's disgusting cancerous growth, and very little view of the inner range. Therefore, while it is a good workout hike it is also very depressing.

I would vote Picketpost...not too far, and it's a really good one. Might be a little chilly, but wouldn't be much worse than Brown's I suspect
