I'm going home, back to The Mountain

Post by azbackpackr »

I'm going home tomorrow. I'm taking the computer down today and will be back online probably on Friday afternoon.

Home is up on The Mountain, as locals like to say, in Eagar, AZ. Most of you already know I've been snowbirding in Yuma. I've been road biking, kayaking, mtn. biking, hiking and petroglyph hunting since I got here Nov. 2. Recently I have mostly been going kayaking. This is a good area because you have so many places to choose from, at least a dozen lakes, plus different sections of the Colorado River. You can even kayak on the Gila down here. I still want to learn whitewater skills, but have found flatwater to be a lot more fun than I thought it would be!!

Talk to you guys when I get up there!

Is the Gila River running down there?

Due to irrigation outflows, the Gila is always running down here. Some sections are better than others. Down by the confluence it is better than up by where it crosses Hwy 95. You really need super-shallow draft, though--our tandem boat runs aground sometimes! We mostly do the Colorado below Laguna Dam and the lakes.

Interestingly, I was just petroglyph hunting the other day over by the farm town of Roll. (Found LOTS of glyphs!) and a section of the Gila that looks pretty deep, I think they are running canal water through it. We hunted and found a put-in. Maybe next year...

I'm still in Yuma, we have been dragging our feet about going home...
