I have the week before July4th (forced) off of work and I'm thinking of doing a 'dayhike' in and out to document the damage and repairs to the area. My plan is to drive up Fri evening (6/26), nap at Hilltop, hike in early Sat morn (dark) and take shots of all of the falls then hike out Sat night, maybe catch a nap along the trail and come home Sunday (6/28).
Id go with you but Ive actually got a permit for the following weekend.

I don't think that camping @ hilltop is at all dangerous. Your car is more likely to be broken into when your not around. But I would be interested in dayhiken it though.

I don't think it's that big a deal either. The only people abroad at night were other visitors night-hiking into the canyon. Mule packers start lining up the train pretty early in the morning.
