this site is great, i have learned a ton and experenced neat places becasue of the information on this site. when ever i get a chance, i share the site with other by word of mouth. i enjoy reading and seeing pictures from everyones trips, and that is where i would like it to stay, this weekend i was out in the west fork and HAZ was scratched in a rock. as much as you like this site, it is not a justafication for defaceing the reason why i am walking along the trail.
so without being a complete jerk about this, lets share our experences with pictures not scratching in rocks!

Yikes, not cool
No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength

Re: advertising HAZ
The difference between graffiti and petroglyphs is 200-300 years. Not to defend it, but at least it wasn't spray painted. If we're only doing what the Indians did 600 years ago, is it really that bad?

Re: advertising HAZ
thats crappy, but there was some recent HAZ scribbling here and there on photosets, so maybe this is just a "copycat" style thing. where did you see this, near the trailhead?

Re: advertising HAZ
Ditto. Let's not let HAZ start developing a bad reputation, by placing graffiti out there. Let's instead set the example for the AZ hiking community. :A1:PageRob wrote:Uncool.

Re: advertising HAZ
And possibly intent. We don't know exactly what most rock art means, but some if not a lot was "holy", spiritual, or linked to the survival of a band/group/tribe/village/etc. Writing "HAZ" on a rock on the other hand doesn't quite have the same meaning behind it and create ill-will towards us.Stiller wrote:The difference between graffiti and petroglyphs is 200-300 years.
Yes, I know, you said you weren't defending it. Just pointing out the difference is a little bigger than I think you made it out to be.

Re: advertising HAZ
it was at a camp site with rock chairs, .
this is the second time i have seen a writing by a HAZ member, this is why i am bringing it up.
i don't think this is like petroglyphs at all, in arches you can be finded 500 dollars if caught scratching on the rocks. when i was in arches i had to tell a girl to stop writing her name on the rocks well her parents watched.
if you want to leave something behind, hide a geocache for someone to find that is not obvious and ugly like the carvings in the aspen trees on the weatherford trail

Re: advertising HAZ
Geez, this should all go without saying. Like having to tell people not to drop their candy wrappers and soda cans. I see those candy wrappers and soda cans and wonder why some people are out there in the woods at all? Why didn't they just stay home and watch TV? (On the other hand, when I see beer cans lying around I know it's because they didn't want to have the empties in their vehicle and go to jail for open container or underage drinking! Happens a lot up here! )
And I have to say, I think that scratching on the rocks is actually worse than spray painting, because spray paint can be removed, the land agencies have way to do it (when they have time and funding
