Flag Notes

Post by Jim »

A thread for notes on Flagstaff.

Did anyone catch Reno 911 last night? They zinged Flagstaff in the opening moments.

Nothing makes me happier than to hear the name of a town I have lived in for slightly more than 2 and 1/2 years mentioned on a late night cable TV show. According to Reno 911, we have competent police.

I do notice a few swamp coolers around here, mostly on old mobile homes, which really do probably need them--lousy insulation. I would guess there are a few in Flag as well.

On the other hand, Show Low, Snowflake, St. Johns and a few other areas in the White Mtns. are actually hotter than Eagar, due to being lower in elevation. I would guess there are more cooling systems in those areas than there are here.

The thing that really amazed me when I moved up here was that there are almost no older homes with central heating! And probably a lot of newer homes without it, as well. My house sure doesn't have it, and we spend a lot of time and money running around feeding the fireplace wood, feeding the pellet stove pellets, and buying propane for the propane wall furnace. Not to mention the space heaters and electric baseboard heaters, which run up the electric bill. Pain in the neck. I grew up in San Diego, and it seems everyone I knew had central heating there, so why not here where it actually gets below flippin' ZERO in winter! Some things are just amazing... I sure have shlepped a lot of 40 lb. bags of pellets and a lot of firewood...

There's a new fire on Mt Elden, the "Radio Fire" of 2009 that is burning in the old Radio Fire of 1977. Its about 2 to 3 acres and in the old burn area on the top of Elden.

Good time to buy a second home in the Arctic of Arizona, I mean Flagstaff. Especially if you are looking to buy something over 1 million dollars, well anything over 500,000 dollars, really.

I have been looking at Flag real estate on the internet off and on, but I don't have the moola. Kachina Village had a lot of deals last time I looked. My daughter has been trying to get us to move there, but now she is talking about moving to San Diego! I doubt I could sell my house right now, since half the houses in town are for sale. You can buy a pretty cute little house for $50,000 in Springerville right now. My house is not little, though. My house payments are very little, though, under $500 a month. So what is there to complain about? Nice big house, half acre, nice neighbors, small payments, great hiking and mtn. biking. I guess I just talked myself into staying for awhile.

I wouldn't recommend Kachina. The winter is extra miserable out there.

Well, if my daughter isn't even going to be living there, I see no reason to move there. I already live where it's cold! And I can attend NAU just fine, online!
