Siphon Draw/Flatiron/5024

Post by hippiepunkpirate »

My current plan is to attend a lunch for my Grandmother's birthday at noon on Saturday, February 20th, in East Mesa. I will being traveling from Flag to Mesa the afternoon of the 19th. I'm hoping to do some form of a Siphon Draw hike on Saturday morning. I plan on hitting the trailhead by 5:30 AM, and being back to the car at about 10:30 AM. I'd love to complete either the Flatiron hike or Superstition Peak 5024 hike, although I'm not sure if 5 hours will be enough time, and it's kind of a time crunch. It'll be my first time setting foot in the Superstitions, so I wouldn't mind having some experienced company, if anyone's willing to join. I'm willing to do Hiero or something else too, as long as it's within about 30-40 minutes of Brown & Higley Roads in Mesa, but I'd prefer Siphon as I want to take advantage of Lost Dutchman State Park while it's still open. Any takers? If so, it can go up on the "Events" board.

Five hours should be enough time to do both flatiron and 5024. They are only about 10-15 minutes apart. I can probably go with.

I may be able to join. The Flatiron is on my list. The last 2 attempts were stifled because of fading daylight and rain.

Upon reaching the top of Siphon Draw there are three areas that I've enjoyed continuing on to explore. 1. Flatiron - Fantastic views of the valley, great feeling to stand on the edge of that cliff edge and do the Jack Dawson "I'm the King of the World" routine. 2. Peak 5024 - If you're into bagging peaks, its an easy extra bit to the top of this one, great 360 degree views, and the hike up climbing through holes under rocks makes it interesting. 3. Hoodoos behind Flatiron - amazing spires look cool from a distance, but even more awesome to be hiking around right amongst them. Having hit all three of these areas on different trips up Siphon, I will tell you that on my next trip I'm passing by the Flatiron and skipping the peak and heading straight for the hoodoos. More to explore. Just take the trail that heads out behind Flatiron to this point: 33.26.10.8 N, 111.26.50.8 W and veer off the trail to your left and up the hill to the hoodoo's.
This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

Rick: That's good info! Hoodoos are always cool. Unfortunately I'll be in a time crunch and won't have much opportunity for extra exploring....maybe next time!
