Cave of the Domes via Grandview trail

Post by gradav »

Hello-

I've done a few more extended backpacking trips in the grand canyon, but this time around our back country permits got denied so we will be doing day hikes instead. I've decided that Grandview trail down to horseshoe mesa will be one of them. Would it be too much distance in one day to go all the way to the cave of the domes, and back up to the rim in one day?

My wife and I are in our mid 20's and are in good shape, but I don't want to bit off more than we'll be able to handle.

Advice?

Any other south rim dayhike suggestions? I've been up and down Bright Angel / South Kaibab a number of times, so I'm not looking to go on those trails...

I should also add that we'll be going the last few days of March.

Advice?

You do not state the dates of your planned visit - be careful always, but moreso in May-September.
The cave is just about 15 minutes past the old dining shack building on HS Mesa, maybe 20, tops. Exploring it can take anywhere from about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on your interest level. I'd say that it's less than 3.5 mi. one-way from the Grandview T/H to the cave. Stash some water on the way down the Grandview for use on the climb out.
Otherwise.... Some folks enjoy the hikes down from Hermit T/H ..... Dripping Springs.... Santa Maria spring....
If you are the adventuresome sort, you might consider The Battleship or Sinking Ship.

I wonder if it's humid in Grandview Caves in the winter?

Caves maintain an average of the ground temperature in the area. Southern Arizona caves---shorts and tshirt. Caves in the higher elevations and cold country ---layer thermals and or wetsuits. Living caves---humidity Dormant caves --usually low humidity.

Head to the Hermit Trail. Less people and plenty to see.

Steve,
I was there on 2/7 - It is not what I'd call 'humid', but certainly moreso than the ambient outside humidity, and it was quite warm; I'd guess-ti-mate 70f+.
This cave has a few drips happening here-and-there, so there are some signs of life.
