The plan is to drive the scenic Rim Rd (FR 300) eastbound from AZ-87 to AZ-260 and then do the Mogollon Rim Vista Loop hike. The preference is to start from Gen. Crook Camp trailhead on Rim Rd at about noon and hike down the rim in the heat of the day and go up in the evening when it's cooler. Another option is to start from 260 trailhead on AZ-260 and hike up out and hike down back.
Leaving Deer Valley at 8:00am, going via Camp Verde.
UPD. Leaving Deer Valley at 9:30am, going via Fountain Hills (as FR300 is probably closed, scenic drive part is cancelled, the hike is still on the plan).

Re: Mogollon Rim Vista Loop - dayhike
Keep in mind that the rim road FR300 is not open yet. Hiking from the 260 turnoff is no problem but the drive from 87 to 260 is not an option yet.
Last week when I called they didn't have an opening date yet but said it would be 2-4 weeks before the snow was melted and the remaining mud would allow the road to open.
I recommend calling the ranger before heading out up on the rim.

I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

Re: Mogollon Rim Vista Loop - dayhike
Oh, they are in winter mode still? Thank you, that's valuable info. I hiked to Horton Springs last weekend and saw some snow patches above 6500' on north looking slopes, but the level ground was dry even at that elevations, so I expected the road to be open already. Then I'll try the east entrance to FR300 from AZ-260 and if it's closed, I'll go up from 260 trailhead.
