Sedona day hikes?

Post by evenstarx3 »

Thinking of driving up to Sedona next week and doing Boynton Canyon, since it seems to be a HAZ favorite. Figure taking my time it'll be a three to four hour hike. Any suggestions for another hike of a couple of hours before I head home?

Doe Mtn.

Post by montezumawell »

The Doe Mtn. TH is probably only 10-15 minutes from the Boynton TH right smack in the same neck of the woods. When you leave Boynton, just don't turn left to head back to Sedona. Go straight onto the dirt for 2-3 miles. You can't miss the TH it shares with Bear Mtn. You could most definitely get up and back in less than 2 hours. But you will probably want to spend your full two hours there. It's such a contrast to the Boynton mecca. Certainly some of the best views for the least effort in the area. Take some time to bushwhack around the lip of the rim of this place which is more properly a mesa and definitely NOT a mountain.

Secret Canyon. It's relatively level in the beginning. Watch for the channel the creek has carved through the rock around 1 mile in. It's to the right of the trail, where the it crosses a drainage that drops down into the creekbed over exposed rock (probably a pretty nice waterfall when it's running). If you cross over the creek and start up a fairly steep hill, you've missed it. There's also a nice gorge, at maybe 2 or 2.5 miles (joe can verify).

Some excellent suggestions have already been made, but I thought I'd toss out the Vultee Arch hike. It's pretty level all the way to the arch. I know it's not the mecca that is Boyton Canyon, but I like it as a simple walk in the woods. Just a thought. Which ever hike you do, have fun!

I just got back from Sedona and it is hard to go wrong finding a place to hike. I took off on foot from the hotel and went in a different direction each day.

One of the Sights

Sometimes I followed stream beds and other times I took a bearing and followed a direction. When I would come across a trail I might follow it for a ways. You can really do anything in this area. I came back with at least 30 photos. It's easy to take a photo around Sedona that will amaze my friends across the country. They don't have anything like this in most areas. This place is visual overload.

Here is another view with Oak Creek liquid flowing and the Steamboat in the background.

Oak Creek watched over by the Steamboat

I walked to the Steamboat from here and on behind it to a very mezmerizing valley. I want to go back now!!!

After taking a look at the weather forecast for Sedona, :( think I'll put off the Boynton Canyon hike until I can count on warmer weather; I'm NOT a cold weather person at all! But thanks for all the tips; they'll help when I do make it up there.

Here's a thought

This was a great topic and we were sad to see it taper off. For whatever reason, we haven't been able to figure out that 'poll' feature that ck1 used so successfully in the hiking footware poll. Maybe he or someone else could start another Sedona topic and do a poll on everybody's most favorite Sedona hike. Maybe give us 5 or 6 or so options and let everybody have at it. It's always fun to read folks' opinions about Sedona trails.
