Humpherys Hump

Post by writelots »

Going up Friday night, camping (I hope near Lockett's). Setting up car shuttle to hike up Inner Basin and down Snow Bowl. Going to drag a few ABCers along. I've never done this peak - always gotten chased down by rain/snow/lightning/etc. I'm pretty determined this time!

Getting beer and a good meal in Flagstaff (or doing an awesome campfire grill, haven't decided) and coming back to TUC on Sunday.

Anyone want to get on the train?

So, the plan is to do the Weatherford - Snow Bowl shuttle hike. Shouldn't be all that much different mileage wise, but I think there's a little more elevation involved...

It's going to be SO NICE! :y:

Looks like we're on for the Weatherford car shuttle route - and I think we're going to try to camp out in the Lava Tube area. Should be a beauty weekend up in Flag...either that or my very presence will bring down the wrath of the weather gods like nothing else. Either way, we win! :y:

I was up there this weekend hiked Humphreys summit Friday and camped Saturday night on the back side of the mountain. When I drove around that area it is so burnt I don't think you would want to go there anyway so sad to see. The road to Weatherford is also closed at least that is what I gathered from it. The Schultz pass road is how you access Weatherford and it was closed as well and burnt anyway. I did pass by the Bear Jaw Abineu loop on the backside and hiked a mile in to check it out real quick on Sat, it was beautiful it might be a good alternate. I am heading to Mt. Baldy most likely and hiking up Friday and spending the night and finishing the loop Sat. Does anyone know approx where I might find some good campsites along the trail near the top? Hope you guys can find a good hike and HI to everyone I am always on here just never post.

Looking at the map I could be wrong but I would definitely check with the ranger station coming from the 418 you definitely cant get on the 420 but maybe coming from the south you can sorry if I am just causing confusion and good luck!

Are you sure? It's been closed just beyond the Schultz Tank TH parking area, but unless there was new fire last week, Weatherford is still accessible.

Hold on, hold on. Schultz Pass Road is open from highway 180 to Schultz Tank. It's only closed from Schultz Tank to highway 89. And no part of the Weatherford Trail was affected by the burn. Weatherford is open, but forms part of the western boundary of the closure. The burn does suck really bad, but the Peaks are still sacred and beautiful and no way is the Schultz Fire going to deter me from hiking them.

I'm taking 2-3 guys up and down the summit trail from Snowbowl, maybe I'll run into you all! We'll be camping in either Hart Prairie or Freidlein Prairie, and starting as close to sunrise as possible! Just look for me, the bald guy probably wearing an orange Savannah cap :D

You sure? When I did Humphrey's on Monday, I heard on the radio that the closure was extended until December, I think!

@RWStorm I don't know if Thai food is your thing, but Pato Thai across from Babbitts is the best I've had in the state IMHO.

Mine is dog friendly, people friendly, alien friendly and buffalo friendly. He does have a strong dislike towards Teva Joe's however.
