Mormon Trail to Hidden Valley Fat Mans Pass

Post by Kathleen Pearl »

This hike will repeat every Monday night at 5:30 beginning October 4, 2010.

My other half is out of Town. I am not hiking alone tonight so if you are interested in attending, message me, otherwise I have to cancel this hike.

Location
Mormon Trail/South Mountain
24th St and Valley View Rd
Phoenix, AZ 85001

Fit beginners to Intermediate level hiking. Not good for beginners that have never hiked, or cannot stand over 40 minutes of exercise on a stairmaster treadmill due to the elevation gain in the first 1.5 miles.
Please evaluate your skill level before doing this hike.

We will meet at the Mormon Trail trailhead on 24th street south of Baseline Rd. Just go South on 24th Street from Baseline Rd. to the parking lot at the end of the road. Please be there at 5:30. We will leave promptly.

We will take the Mormon Trail for about 1.1 miles and gain about 980 feet of elevation to the National Trail, then to Hidden Valley Trail going through the "Fat Man's Pass" and back to the Mormon trail. This is a loop hike, and will be approximately 3.5 miles long.

Rattlesnakes, and other critters are prevalent in this area and capable of defending themselves Please pay careful attention to the ground in front of you and to where you place your hands, and feet.

You will be responsible for your own safety, and equipment.

Equipment: Minimum of 2 liters water (camel pack) sturdy hiking shoes, boots, trail runners. (loose gravel, do not wear tennis shoes) First aid kit. Flashlight or headlamp.

In hotter weather bring bandanna or neck wrap, ice pack, hat, sunscreen.

Loose gravel, steep trails that will be descended during twilight hours. Good night vision or lighting is necessary to make decent.
