What do you think about wearing scented products while hiking?

I don't care either way.

Perfume, cologne, etc. on the trails?

Post by CannondaleKid »

It was nowhere near the worst I've experienced on the trail, but having just returned from a hike in which I was almost wafted away by the perfume of an obvious "city hiker"(no water bottle, flat shoes, oblivious to the surroundings) as she passed by, it got me to thinking what other HAZ'ers would think. After a quick search and not finding a previous thread or poll I figured I'd throw down the gauntlet...
Let the jousting begin. :gun:

FYI, option #2 is my choice... while a basic deodorant is fine, ok, probably a good thing :o if it is noticeable just in passing, it's too much. But then I get headaches from smoke, perfumes, etc. in confined areas anyway.

Ok, have at it... :STP:
And please, don't hold back your horror stories... like someone reeking so bad of perfume you were afraid of an explosion if they got too close to the campfire. :scared:

I rarely see others on the trail, and even more rarely get close enough for a good whiff. I figure that's best for everybody.

:D That would be me. The option was looking a little lonely with no votes for it....so, voila!! :sl:

Someone up the thread said you just smell them for a minute as you pass them. But what if you are hiking along behind them? Years ago, when I first joined SAHC, I went on some of their C hikes. A lot of participation in those C hikes, and lots and lots of older women in their 60's, 70's and 80's. There was one in particular who wore a strong perfume. Oh, my. I had to always make sure I was hiking in front of her. Hiking behind her was brutal.

I'll put on deo. before I leave the house, but colone? Why? When backpacking, I'll wash my face and feet before going to bed (face then feet :D ) but thats just for comfort reasons.
Too much colone or perfume on the trails is a bit silly, but, whatever. Never really bothered me.

Doesn't all that scented stuff attract animals and insects? I've always read that was a backpacking no-no. Even toothpaste (that you spit out) will attract unwanted company. (use baking soda)

I have more problems with heavily scented people in confined spaces like cars, planes, hallways, etc. Outdoors there is usually a breeze that can clear the air. As someone mentioned, some of these scents can attract bees or animals so I really don't mind if someone else wants to be the decoy for me.

LOL you guys crack me up. I also noticed that so far no females entered this discussion, so I'll dare to be the first. azbackpackr, you kind of remind me of my brother in Germany. During one of my visits to him, having my head buried in the down pillow, all I could smell was arm pits. (deodorants is just catching on over there and not fast enough for me) Women are not much into shaving their arm pits either. Anyway, I did mention to my brother the 'odor' in the pillow and asked why his wife does not shave. (we are very blunt to each other) his comeback he considered it 'sexy'. Both the smell and the hair! :o :sl:

I never thought there would be any confusion as to my gender before or that I would have the need to label a photo of me as "female". :(
