Burro = wild horse?

Post by kingsnake »

Noticed a recent trip up near Lake Pleasant had a wild burro photo. Should it be labelled as "Wild Horse", since that has been assumed to include domestic horses as well, or should I create a wild burro label? :-k

(I know a burro is not a horse, just for labelling purposes ...)

Or, in general, how discrete should labels be?

We have choices! Donkey, pumpkin, if male a jackass.... I was not close enough to see if animal was a male. Being from California with lots of Spanish influence I went with Spanish word burro.

AHHHHHH!!!! I totally deleted this before anybody responded! I feel so stupid. :oops:

I had no idea "burro" was Spanish for donkey. Ironic, because learning Spanish is one my bucket list items. Anybody know a good place to learn/take classes?

I just went through semester after semester of it in community college--actually went back years later and took the same classes over again at a different CC. Ended up with 26 credits in Spanish. It does help to take those four semesters that you can get at the CC, but be patient. While you are learning it in class, it would be good to do some traveling to a Spanish-speaking country. You will learn a lot more quickly if no one is around who speaks English. That is, once you have taken a couple of semesters and have a little bit of grammar and vocabulary.

My daughter went on to upper division Spanish, and minored in it, and did a study abroad in Costa Rica. This greatly accelerated her fluency. Complete fluency is a very hard goal to attain though. It also depends upon your abilities--it's easy for some people, harder for others.

Don't take classes at the CC that are short and cheap and are called "conversational Spanish." Those are really not that great.

Anyway, it is a long haul, and you have to keep at it. It is very rewarding once you get to the point you find yourself in a conversation with someone, talking and responding. Pretty fun!

The "spanish" language is different in almost every spanish speaking country. I have a couple of friends that spent 2 years in Costa Rica and said that the spanish you learn in school is SO different than the spanish that is spoken over there. The spanish in Mexico is different than the spanish spoken in Spain. So on and so forth. They said the best way to learn is go to a spanish speaking country for a couple years and learn that way. To bad it's easier said than done for most of us. I would love to go to another country for a couple of years just to learn a new language.

I agree, Kevin, but those classes give you basic grammar and vocabulary. Then if you pay attention in whatever country you're in, you can morph it over into the local dialect. All I know is, I can speak it somewhat, make myself understood, and understand a lot of what they are saying.

You could also watch a lot of Telemundo. "La Pobre Nina Rica" was great. My little bro is fluent in conversant- and business-class Spanish, and he told me that you not only have to learn to think en Espanol, but use it often as well.

@azbackpackr
I wish I would have paid more attention in spanish class in school. The only spanish I know is some curse words I learned on the job sites. :)
@Jim Lyding
I worked with a guy that listened to the mexican radio stations and only worked with non-english speaking guys to learn spanish. I'll be dammed if he can't speak spanish now, and very well at that!

I learned to cuss in Spanish from a Puerto Rican guy in basic training, then picked up a few more words from guarding the Yuma jail. Know a few regular words as well, but can't actually speak it ...
