Well our road/camping trip is in the planning stages. Things are looking like they are going to be coming together quite nicely. I do need some advise. We have found several things to do, most are decided as a GO by the whole family. Now, most all we will be doing will be in the high elevation areas, as it will be early summer. We plan to spend about 10 days or so, (likely more) and do some fishing, short morning hikes, and some touristy things (zoos, children oriented stuff for the kids. With most of our time except about 2-4 days (maybe 1-2 in 4 corners area, 1-2 in Yuma sightseeing, visiting our home for 3 yrs.) being in the Sedona area and surroundings, does anyone know of a campground they would recommend? I would like it to be definintely in a forest near a creek, to sort of be our base camp for a week or so..... it would also need to accept campers up to about 27'.
Now to my second need..... anyone have any opinion they would like to share about the dino tracks near Tuba City? I have read alot of conflicting articles on the internet about experiences. I have learned there is alot of good knowledge here, so that is what I am looking to get. So HikeAz, what do you think, would it be worth taking my 10 yo science nut?
(More questions on particulars to come)..
As always, thanks a many.
Marvin

Re: Camping (Trailer) Trip
Pine Flats campground in upper Oak Creek Canyon fits the bill, but when going past there last month it was still being refurbished and was closed. BUT, the signs indicated it would be opening for summer. Not sure about the trailer size. I would call the Ranger District up there to find out.gsp416dre wrote:o be definintely in a forest near a creek, to sort of be our base camp for a week or so..... it would also need to accept campers up to about 27'.
The dino tracks near tuba city are cool, but only cool enough IF you're already in the area. If you're going to the 4 corners, it would be on the way and worth a visit, especially to a 10 yr old science nut.

The area you would like to camp, scenic but quite busy during the summer months. SE of Flagstaff is Pine Grove Campground which you may want to check out, visit the Coconino National Forest website and also http://www.camparizona.com for more info. Also suggest a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona.

Pine Flats in Oak Creek Canyon is still undergoing construction and is not open as of last Sunday. All the other campgrounds were full as was West Clear Creek.

Allergic to cities.

You can make reservations for Pine Grove Campground and stay up to two weeks and that campground gets busy as well. Friends are leaving Flagstaff friday on touring bicycles and heading for Mormon Lake for a camping trip. Thought it was last weekend but this weekend (weather may be interesting)

Awesome. Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like it is going to be an absolute as far as reserving ahead of time anywhere I stay in that area.

The Dino tracks are neat just expect to pay the "guide" for them... And there is some misinformation given there... Such as dino eggs are not there and no skeletons but the tracks are neat... I just listen to them and then filter out the wrong stuff...
I agree on the Museum of Northern Arizona has a nice little dino area too.

Wow, the last time I was by that area, there was a small sign on the highway that just said "<-- Dinosaur Tracks" and you were pretty much on your own to find them. Now you have to pay someone to "guide" you to/through them?? Commercialism gone wrong...Dschur wrote:The Dino tracks are neat just expect to pay the "guide" for them...
