So I went to this squirrel party and met a few HAZers.. I want to know when we all are getting together for some camping event. Not to mentiom; it's about time our friend AZPride takes a rope to the top.. How about Cochise?! -- hiking maybe climbing, car camping in style? (My car camping still includes cooking on a fire and sleeping in a tent.)

I must say, you're looking a bit feverish. Perhaps some rest away from the germ-covered world of retail book sales will help you recover?

Re: Fellow HAZers
How many people are serious about doing a Pot Luck Dinner Saturday Night? Vote "Yes" by liking this Post. There does not have to be 100% participation, if a few people would rather do their own "thing", that's fine too.
I was thinking of 2 Main Dishes. If everyone is agreeable to "passing the hat" to defer the cost for whoever brings it, A Spiral Ham (Costco has good ones), might be a good choice for one of the dishes. It doesn't necessarily have to be heated up, it's really good cold too, it will feed alot of people and if there's some left over, which I'm sure there will be, we can use it for sandwiches for Sunday. Or if we can bribe someone to make a big skillet of Ham and Eggs Sunday Morning...
I was thinking we should include another main dish for any that maybe don't eat pork. The variety of side dishes is also endless with Ham. Just throwing the thought out there.

Unrelated to the event, but what did you do to get that map as a link? Is it 'Save To HAZ Harddrive?'chumley wrote:http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=936&M=3

Re: Fellow HAZers
Yes. Read more about the HAZ Route Manager and how it works by the tutorial options on the left side of this page:Patrick L wrote:Unrelated to the event, but what did you do to get that map as a link?
http://hikearizona.com/map.php?TAB=10
Saved routes/waypoints are stored privately "just for you" and you can "open/load" in the route manager anytime you are logged in to haz. To share it with other people, click the "link for route" button and it will create a custom url link. You will have to select "public" permissions for others to see it, otherwise people who click the link won't see your route.

Re: Fellow HAZers
The early forecast is looking pretty good. It looks like temps will cool off a bit toward this weekend (but still stay above normal) with high-pressure building in again early next week. If that holds into next weekend we should be absolutely great. But there is some sign of a low developing near Alaska that could affect us by the middle of next week. That would probably be bad news. But at this point the NWS is reporting that there are no winter storms expected in AZ in the next 7-14 days.
Over the weekend, this unusually warm weather resulted in temperatures actually reaching 70 degrees at the campsite, with the early morning lows in the upper 30s. Not bad at all!

Re: Fellow HAZers
Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to do this trip, I'm going to have to drop out. A couple of things have come up and I am going to have to stay in town.
I am incredibly bummed, I was really looking forward to this trip, had the time off and was happy to be able to meet some more fellow HAZers. Just wasn't in the cards I guess. You all have fun and take lots of pictures.....

While I'm saddened to hear of those who won't be able to attend, I'm also looking forward to the three extra Pecan Pie ales that will be available!

Re: Fellow HAZers
Please come- Call or text me if this seems confusing but I promise you it will be fun!!

This was my 1st outdoor camping experience a few years ago and it literally changed me, it's magical-
Bring a bit of fire wood, maybe some campfire food and maybe some beer.
If that seems challenging just bring your pretty face and we'll do the rest!
http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=982
I did this which moves camp slightly down the road.
It also helps to read the road names.
-This is meant to help but if it seems confusing don't read it!!-
I think the turn for Middlemarch road is fairly easy to find-
It is NOT gated and is a wide dirt road that is fairly maintained but does have a washboard feel to it.
It is after an AZ road checkpoint but before Tombstone.
Any time I have missed it I hit Tombstone and know it was one road back
I remember it this way- Middlemarch road seems to take forever
then you turn left at a national forest sign (?) onto 687
then you stay on that road awhile until you pass a cattle guard
then you make the immediate right-
Drive past Sweet Rock and veer slightly down hill.
There are camping areas amongst trees and there the road dead ends with a circular path leading through camp.
If you are coming for the day you will find a lot of us climbing at Sweet Rock or hiking Sheepshead it's trailhead is the first right of the 687 road.

Re: Fellow HAZers
I'm feeling a little more interested in this as it draws closer. It's too late to request time off, but I might be able to trade with someone and make it down for a quick hike and a hello. China Peak looks good...
Edit: I wonder if I could get Sheepshead and China in the same day.

Re: Fellow HAZers
Life gets complicated. At this point I'm hoping to at least come down for a 1/2 day. :tt:
This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.
