West Clear Creek

Post by Puddie922 »

We are planning to take some Boy Scouts to West Clear Creek and have our older boys hike and camp while leaving the younger boys to camp at Bull Pen. I had a parent approach me with a concern. They heard that last year there was trouble with homeless living there, trash and a lot of parties that included drugs and alcohol. I can't find any info to support this and the parent is not providing me with anything to back up the claim. Has anyone heard anything like this? We will be going the end of March so I would like to find out what I can so we can make an informed decision.
Thank you!

@Puddie922
I can't speak to the parties, drugs, or alcohol. I can say that it was getting a lot use when we went last June and the camping grounds were trashed. However I did see signs that folks were coming in to clean up on that day. This was just one day, and our only experience for that area so I can't tell you if that is seasonal or an aberration.
The trail areas were in great shape.

It would probably depend on when you're planning this outing. When I was there this past summer, there was plenty of partying going on. There were definitely people carrying coolers down the trail, drunk people at the swimming holes, and a couple groups smoking weed right by the trail. If you're going in cooler months, it might be a completely different thing since I think the party crowd goes there mostly for the swimming. I'm sure someone else on here would know better. It struck me mostly as a redneck playground-- maybe I was there on a bad day. A neighbor of mine told me the last time he was there, they had to move their camp because a couple guys with glocks were emptying clip after clip into one of the swimming holes while they were trying to swim :o

We are looking to go the end of March. I think I will probably need to take a drive up and see how things are. Thanks for the help! If anyone has any other info it would be much appreciated!
Thanks again!

I would have a backup plan for sure. You can probably assume in Arizona that anything with easily accessible swimming is going to be a party spot.

This is always a party spot. It's easy to get to and easy to get back to town for another 12 pack.

I was up there the end of April last year and there a lot of people. I know you are talking about a month earlier so the cooler weather might be better but I don't think you will know for sure until shortly before.
