Reavis Ranch 2.0 - No Gimpy Hippies

Post by Hippy »

So, I've decided to revisit Reavis again this year...mainly to tackle Mound Mtn which we were unable to get to last year due to some wild weather! (And possibly due to a "minor" foot injury...)
But also because there were so many of you who weren't able to join us last time and requested a do-over! :)

So here's your chance!
Mark it on your calendars, pack your bag and lace up your boots!

EDIT: changed to first weekend in November!

November 1-3, 2013 (fri, sat, sun)

There will be a visit to Circle stone, Mound Mtn and I'm sure we can come up with some more fun :)

I plan to hike in from the South and am hoping to take over a good chunk of the meadow from that end.

For those of you who haven't experienced this event before, this IS a backpacking trip, you are all responsible for packing in and out your own gear and food etc, there was a reliable water source to filter from last year and I'm pretty sure its permanent, year round so bring your water filter.

It is bear country but we didn't have any problems before.
Depending on which trail you come in from you can expect up to a 9 mile hike in. Check trail descriptions for more info :)

And...if we're lucky, maybe we can once more dine on the best apples known to mankind!! Sooo delicious!

Any questions?

I just have no idea where I'll be living at that time, so I only put myself as "interested."

Everyone going in from the south with Hippy is meeting somewhere in Mesa off the 60 and carpooling from there Friday morning
All those hiking in from the north need to discuss carpooling amongst themselves

Oh good, the south trail appears to be the shortest - I've trained this year, but not specifically for uphill hikes. Do you guys bring a one-person tent or tough it out in a mummy bag? I need to get a bigger hiking pack at Sportsmans!

@Townbrown South may be shorter by a few miles, i've not hiked in from the South yet, i hiked in from North with my crew last year on a busted ankle : rambo : and was fine, the south is a rough road, high clearance/4x4 required i've been told.
The two vehicles and drivers I have already have full seats unfortunately, so post or PM other attendees to see if you can carpool with them.
We don't want to crowd the trailhead and pollute unnecessarily! :D

some take one person tents, some take HUGE tents, i've seen a squirrel and a lizard and Jackie Chan in a hammock before. i'll probably take my hammock this year too. We hangers gotta stick together!
It was COLD and we got a crazy downpour of rain, hail and snow last year, but only at night, the days were perfect!
So you can bring whatever you think will keep you warm and comfortable. I'm sure I'll local weatherman will be posting a weather report for me soon, right Uncle Chums?

The south is pretty easy till you get to the switch backs up to the saddle. Its not too hard. Then its a piece a cake to the ranch. Coming out is really easy till the last mile or mile and a half. That's a good work out on the legs. I like the Rodgers TH better.
I won't be able to get up there that week because I will be taking my nephew up the weekend before for his birthday.

I took the road less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

@Townbrown
I agree with Bootsie, getting to the North TH is cake...unless you get stuck behind Sun City drivers looking for kicks :scared:

But as far as road conditions go, it's smooth sailing so if no other 4x4 drivers opt in for South route then maybe you can hook up a group to go in from the North with you and all carpool together. :D

So I checked interested on hike, because I will be in area anyways and wouldn't mind meeting some cool hikers..but not really in any HAZ loops, so will probably be doing my own thing, However, I am totally for giving people rides and helping out fellow hikers. I have 4wd and plenty of room..The only kicker is I plan on going in Friday as well, but I teach school and hate leaving kiddos with sub, I know lame...Anyways, that means a night hike Friday, I promise its not that bad, I do it a lot, and you will get there safely to where group is camping, just a little late in evening :) probably after 11...But if I do take full-day off we can leave Friday morning..I will let people know and we can PM and set up details, TH, exact time..etc..

I plan to hike in from the North. I teach as well, and hate having a sub. I guess my hike will be partly in darkness. Anyone that needs/wants to carpool let me know.

I looked up the weather for the weekend, I know, not my thing, silly huh?

But it looks pretty decent, unless it pours, which it shouldn't!

As of now we're looking at highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid to upper 40s, not too shabby huh! :y:
So pack accordingly! And hope our pyro, I mean fire caretakers, can find enough fuel to keep us warm at night!

I am leaning more toward taking whole day off work, so I would be open, to that..find out when rest of group is planning on meeting at TH, I plan to go Rogers Trough, but I am thinking about being silly and taking West Pinto via Fire line and avoiding the boy scouts and day hikers along Reavis trail...so you will prob. want to hike in with larger group, or maybe go solo in. If I leave Friday, I will want a nice early start..TH by 7-730ish...
