Syria

Does anyone think we need to get involved in Syria? If so, why? I've kind of stayed away from the news lately, but I do read The Week magazine, weekly. Anyway, I'm very worried about this Syria thing. My son is on a ship right now I suspect I know where it's going, although no one is saying.

I am generally inclined to think we should let them fight their own battles. If anyone disagrees, I will listen. I am not vociferously opposed, I just don't get why does the US have to police certain civil wars (and, very glaringly, not police others, such as the horrific atrocities in Africa which have been occurring for decades)?

Well, support or hate Obama, with the factitious nature of Syria, the low popularity, and the events from 2003 to today, it makes no sense to go in there. Sure seems like there must be a profit motive somewhere to cause this.

A Swedish reporter confronted President Barack Obama at a press conference Wednesday in Stockholm as part of the first ever bilateral meeting between the nation’s two top leaders.

The reporter asked, “I was wondering, could you describe the dilemma to being a Nobel Peace Prize winner and getting ready to attack Syria?”

He should ask why the Administration has a "just move it program", but has nothing about cutting sugar or processed foods from our diet. Let's pretend the only reason obesity is so high is because we're all just lazy, not that people consume way to much sugar. Different issue, though.

I heard today that maybe Congress is less likely to approve bombing, now that they see how little support there is for it. There was a video I saw, supposedly a guy cutting out the heart of a soldier and eating it, with a triumphant pose, and the narrator saying that those are the folks we are supporting.

I have always felt that certain populations on this planet NEED a strongman, king, whether benevolent or not. Some cultures are not ready for democracy, since hardly anyone can read, and they all fall into tribalism and factionalism.

I just got an email response from President Obama and he still doesn't get it.
"Over the past two years, what began as a series of peaceful protests against the repressive regime of Bashar al-Assad has turned into a brutal civil war in Syria. Over 100,000 people have been killed. In that time, we have worked with friends and allies to provide humanitarian support for the Syrian people, to help the moderate opposition within Syria, and to shape a political settlement. But we have resisted calls for military action because we cannot resolve someone else's civil war through force."
We're a bit late for the 'moderate opposition' because the majority of the opposition groups are nowhere near moderate.

"If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons. As the ban against these deadly weapons erodes, other tyrants and authoritarian regimes will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gases and using them. Over time, our troops could face the prospect of chemical warfare on the battlefield. It could be easier for terrorist organizations to obtain these weapons and use them to attack civilians."
Oh yeah, let's regurgitate the much-promoted but totally baseless Domino Theory that got us into the Vietnam War... and wasted 53,000 young American's lives.
If the American people continue to believe this crap by the Obama Administration we might as well line up and ask for more of our rights to be taken away.

As far as strikes go, let's see what it looks from another standpoint... if Syria launched a strike against the U.S. we would consider it an act of war and launch into a full-fledged war against Syria.
So... if the U.S. launches a strike against Syria, a sovereign nation, how would that not be an act of war?

How is it that we can send drones and cruise missiles to kill anyone we want in practically any country we want and get away without it being an act of war? Oh yeah, that's right, we're the global policeman and we can do anything we want, or else!
I guess what's good for the goose is not good for the gander.
