Spill devastates bay

Post by Jim »

I considered posting in food, but thought it might not makes sense.

Here is one spill of viscous black stuff you probably haven't heard about. Shocking! But it isn't oil.

Wow! Who would have thought that Molasses could be so deadly...And doesn't sound like there's any way to clean it up.... :(

Make Rum? No, no real way to clean it up that will not cost a lot. Probably a very large suction system, like pools use, could do it, but it is cheaper to let it rot since the damage is probably all done.

I tend to think it will repair itself and things will be okay within a year. Since it brought up questions regarding the 2010 Deepwater Horizons huge oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, I read a wiki on that topic. There are still some residual effects from that spill, but I also think that comparing it to the BP disaster is like comparing apples and oranges.

Did you look and read the article Liz? This isn't a matter of Oil slicking up some birds and Wildlife...The Molasses sank and is behaving in such a way that it is sucking the Oxygen out of the Water completely...Everything is dying and they said this will have an effect on the Ecosystem for years...They are really worried about the contamination getting out of the Harbor and the more Widespread effects....They are calling this one of Hawaii's largest Ecological Disasters..ever....

I would think they would WANT it to flush out into the sea. I read it is in a very enclosed bay, however, and that it has very little circulation. Nature does heal itself, but first the stuff has to dilute, rot and also move out to sea. Sounds very nasty, though. Very sad.
