Culture Labels
I just went to label some of my photos, and was surprised to discover there is no heiroglyph / petroglyph label. Or are they listed under some other subject? (I did not see them in Geology either.)

Re: Culture Labels
Petroglyphs are listed by style (Basketmaker III, Abajo-LaSal, etc) and type (anthropomorphic, zoologic, abstract). Type in a "type" in the search area, and all available styles will be listed. PageRob is the expert on glyphs and pictos.

Re: Culture Labels
There are also several good books on the subject. They're a bit pricy, but I found them helpful in trying to understand spatial and temporal distributions of culture. (I said trying to understand.)

Re: Culture Labels
Tons of petroglyph/pictograph labels, but they are sorted by culture under the family (Hohokam Rock Art, Anasazi Rock Art, etc.) then by specific named styles. Gila Abstract is the most common on the site, I believe.

Re: Culture Labels
Haven't run across that one before. I've heard of the Perry Mesa Tradition, which some archaeologists view as a separate culture from either the Hohokam, Salado, or Sinagua. Most of my rock art labels come directly from Polly Schafsama's publications, and she doesn't mention a rock art style called Central Arizona Tradition. If you've got a reference with a description of the style, I'll take a look at it.

I've seen other authors use different names than she did, but nothing that overtly conflicted with her system.PageRob wrote:Most of my rock art labels come directly from Polly Schaafsma's publications, and she doesn't mention a rock art style called Central Arizona Tradition.

I would think that our culture label for "Campsite" would suffice to include.chumley wrote:...but possibly because there's no label for "tent", "sleeping bag", or "chair"?

It will be helpful when searching for potential hammock-friendly campsites and hikes, which is what I was doing when I went looking for the label.Grasshopper wrote: I would think that our culture label for "Campsite" would suffice to include.

Re: Culture Labels
The problem with these labels is that some people put up new labels when an older label would suffice, don't you think? And sometimes I have wondered why a particular photo has a particular label... Just sayin'...

Seems self-explanatory to me... It's basically a warning not to post any copyrighted material. Why? So neither Joe nor the poster gets into hot water I presume.azbackpackr wrote:What is the no copyright data thing for?

Re: Culture Labels
Certainly, but I just explained a legimate reason for a utility of my requested label. A regular "campsite" does me no good in finding a place to hang a hammock.azbackpackr wrote:The problem with these labels is that some people put up new labels when an older label would suffice, don't you think? Re: Culture Labels
I think that's a perfectly good reason to have a label. Especially because there are so many photos labeled campsite, it's not always easy to peruse them all looking for suitable trees in the background:

probably not

seems likely
