BUFFALO!!!

Post by Jim »

Two Socks and I were at the new Whole Foods on River RD in Tucson and I was delighted to see that they carry Buffalo Steaks. Sadly, I can not find this meat in southern New Mexico, so I'll be buying a fair share to freeze and take home.

I encourage people who enjoy this lean, flavorful, grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meat, to run, not walk, fly, not drive, and ignore all stop signs, traffic lights, and crosswalks, to purchase this meat. That way I can buy more the next time I'm in town.

Now, no one try to attack me before Graham Greene's character recognizes me.

@Jim_H
Saw it on the menu in the brewery we ate at down the mountain from the new digs. Used to get it pretty regularly in Oregon when it was on sale. :)

I've only had the ground stuff at the supermarket and buffalo burgers in Avalon, Catalina Island Ca. MUST GET STEAK!!!
Understand, when you eat meat, that something did die. You have an obligation to value it - not just the sirloin but also all those wonderful tough little bits.

The steaks are the way to go. I like the ground, and it is fairly cheap, but not as good as whole cuts. I can get OK ground bison at the Alamogordo Walmart, of all places, and the stores in Las Cruces carry the 90% lean ground, but so far only the Co-op on El Paseo has these little, expensive cuts that just aren't very good. Last nights sirloin was great.

Bison is one of the best steaks and ground meat available. Low in fat and high in protein and iron. I've been able to find it out in the East Valley but it's not cheap.

You're a week too late for the Chandler festival, but if you haven't tried it, ostrich is another excellent alternative to beef that is very low in fat.

And while it's a whole lot more difficult to find "up over" here, I would also recommend kangaroo to anyone who ever has the opportunity to try it. Mmmm. Those are some good steaks! (and healthy, too!)

Rare meats are just that. We have an agricultural system that has an abundance of the exact same thing. Most of it fairly unhealthy. But boy, if you love corn fed stock and processed foods with additives that seem to make no sense, like wheat or dairy in things that you would never think they would be in, or foods with corn syrup added to them, you're in heaven.

At least Ostrich and Kangaroo aren't native to this continent or hemisphere. Bison was once one of the most numerous animals out there, and cattle weren't here 521 years ago. I bought about 11 pounds of bison that I wrapped and froze to take home. I'm happy. it should last me a week, 2 if I ration it. No, that should hopefully last me several months.

Speaking of Buffalo--and your other favorite place on the planet--did you know that Flagstaff gets more snow annually than Buffalo? It's true. But Flagstaff isn't very good eatin' so Buffalo has the upper hand there. And it's not just the steaks, but the wings too. ;)

I suppose Flag might, but it probably gets less water in that snow, and more moisture probably sublimates away. Then again, few move to NY. I don't hate Flag, not any more. I'm not stuck there trying to get away. I was considering visiting there and the Canyon in June. Don't think I'm ready for and R3, so decided against it. Still don't want to live there.

Well, I stopped in at the River Road Whole Foods in Tucson in the middle of last week to buy bison. On the way out, they counter person told me they were out that Thursday, that day, but they would have more by the weekend. Then when I got there around 5 PM on Wednesday, I was informed that they would no longer carry the store cut bison, only the individually packed bison ground meat and steaks. Sadly, one of the main attractions of that store is sort of gone. Granted they still carry some, but it wasn't selling well and so they are cutting back. These pre-packed steaks are the same ones someone can buy in City Markets in Durango, Cortez, Alamosa and probably other Colorado towns, but the price is much higher per pound than in Colorado. I guess that is the shipping fee? It's a shame, as they trim a lot of the fat, which is one of the best parts of the rib-eye steak. One can still get the store cut ribeyes in Santa Fe, which is good, as it is far closer than Tucson or Colorado.
