Arizona Trivia: The Arizona state rattlesnake is the Willard's Rattlesnake found above 5000 feet in southeastern Arizona.

I was curious to see a pic of our state rattlesnake only to find that there is no label or pic presently set up for this one.
Has anyone ever actually seen one in the wild?

Hank - it is also named the Arizona Ridge-nosed rattlesnake. It is small, reclusive and has a limited range in the sky islands. I had never heard of it as a Willard's Rattlesnake even though it is C. willardi after Professor Willard who discovered it. I think it is still the most recently discovered species of rattlesnake in North America. The label is there (now) but photos will probably be rare.

Today I learned that Arizona has a mean elevation of 4100 feet. It ranks 7th. I was a bit surprised by two of the states higher up (pun intended )

I assume you are referring to the base elevation of the playing field and not the height or tallness of the stadium? Correct?

@Jim_H Yep. Makes a good trivia question for the baseball nerds in your life. Always ask them where the second highest field is because the first highest is so obvious.

It's amazing how many stadiums sit at very low elevations. The new park in San Francisco is listed at 15 feet. Fenway Park is 20 feet. The stadium in Tampa must be about the same. The Mets, Yankees, Orioles, and Phillies are all just barely higher. (It looks like Yankee Stadium is at 28 feet).

South Mountain is considered the Garden of Eden where God created mankind. The creator sat atop Mount Suppoa (radio towers) and let the action begin. He watched his creation. A man with a bad temper became Scorpion. A babbling woman became Butterfly. A boy who could run fast became Antelope. A joker became Coyote.

Fascinating. I never knew there was a Garden of Eden in Arizona. And of all the amazing places here, to think it was South Mountain all the time!?
I guess that means God also created the Los Lomitas Trail?

If that is not a reason to stop the South Mountain Freeway, I don't know what is. Sounds pretty pumpkin sacred to me. "Garden of Eden" huh? Where are the dam* apple trees? If there's a Garden of Eden in AZ I would put it in Oak Creek Canyon or Reavis Ranch. Or that corner in Winslow Arizona in the Jackson Brown song.
