I thought you were going away for a while? Apparently my suicide prevention techniques aren't so bad after all! Glad you're ok!azbackpackr wrote:That exact sign was made for the April 2011 govt shutdown that was averted at the 11th hour. I have a photo of that exact same sign taken back then, in April 2011, behind the ranger station at Lee's Ferry.

@big_load
The whole Nation is disgusted...You should see the rest of the Web...In the matter of 7 seconds that guy talked himself right out of a job! And if Texas reelects him? I think the rest of the Nation should vote to fire Texas....And let's give that Park Ranger a bonus of that Congressman's entire year's wages....These guys are out of control... :SB:
Ok, I'm done... ;)

Liz, you're apparent anger (in lack of a better word perhaps) seems to approximately match that which you had back in the summer of 2011 when the entire Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest nearly burned down.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown
On another website I was being exhorted to call my congressperson, give money, etc. etc. In fact, one guy was trying to get me to give BEER money, to the folks camped at Marble Canyon Lodge! They already have plenty of beer! They are all packed for a river trip! I am in the middle of a couple of crises right now, and I haven't wanted to be involved much in anything. However, I'll poke my head into the room once in a while. Just don't ask me to DO anything.hippiepunkpirate wrote:Liz, your apparent anger (in lack of a better word perhaps) seems to approximately match that which you had back in the summer of 2011 when the entire Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest nearly burned down.
This government shutdown is going to affect my job if it continues. I wish my boss would just get it over with and lay me off right now. I would like to be eligible to collect unemployment while I am moving to California. If I was not working 40 hours per week I could probably get myself all moved in a couple of weeks. However, my boss is not ready to lay me off just yet, although the phone has stopped ringing at my job with new orders from US govt. agencies (which is most of our business.)

I saw that last night while making dinner and almost blew a head gasket. I went into a 15 minute flaming tirade that was finally doused with liberal amounts of tequila and Coors.big_load wrote:@Outdoor Lover
I saw that on the news tonight. I can't describe my disgust.
Ooops I said liberal.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown
FYI - East Rim Drive/Highway 64 is now closed ... you can't enter the Park at all unless you are a resident, or coming to visit one, or are one of the few vendors still making deliveries.
Rangers issued 40 tickets yesterday to people attempting to hike the trails. We are supposed to stay in "developed areas" only ... so rim walking from Mather to Hermit is still ok - planning on taking a stroll along the deserted rim tomorrow.
It is eerily quiet and empty here in the Park ...
Left for Havasupai Tuesday morning and just got back last night - happy to have missed the first few days of madness here, but it's kinda cool now. Feel bad for all the people out of a job for the duration, though. Our store is open for the convenience of residents from 10am until 4pm starting tomorrow, with managers doing all the work.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown
Given that the GC is one of "The Seven Wonders of the World" I wonder if any of the countries we subsidize would be willing to pony up some $$ so their citizens can visit while they're here?
(no response needed, just venting). I'm betting the NPS is one of the least expensive services around, yet it's shutdown affects more people that anything else (besides the 800k workers without paychecks). It simply doesn't make any sense.

@paulhubbard
Gov. Brewer offered to fund the park with state money but she was turned down by park superintendent Dave Uberuaga.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown
I'm not sure what laws dictate how these government shutdowns work, but once this one gets resolved, I hope the lawbooks get rewritten to give states/cities/communities ect. more power to keep federal lands open in the future if ever the federal government can't keep its sh*t together.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown
During the last shutdown, AZ was able to pony up the funds to keep things running. The present administration has no desire to let that happen; they want everyone to suffer as much as possible... I'm not going to waste my breath trying to talk sense to my distinguished representatives from Kalifornia...

Here's a quote from a park ranger back east : “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

Propaganda horse feces!! In this day and age EVERY news agency has an agenda.($$$$)
If the members of Congress and the President want to point a finger at who's to blame, they would all have to be standing in front of a mirror..... But they probably couldn't get that right either

Good news in Sedona: At the Wilson Mtn TH the money collecting machine is down, so no fee and no tickets.

@RW, It's true. I was behind a federal employee who was off today, and he was doing 35 MPH under the speed limit!
