mustang mountains near Elgin

Post by base871 »

Me and a friend have been wanting to do a car camping trip with some dayhikes into the mustang mountains near Elgin. I have been trying to find out who maintains the land (BLM, state trust, etc.) to see what permits if any are needed. Problem is I cant seem to find any info. I was told it was BLM, but not sure. Does anyone know? Also, is there places to car camp near it? Thanks!

A few small pieces of the range on the south and west sides are BLM, the rest is AZ State Trust land.

There is a website called "geocommunicator" that may have the information you are looking for.

I'm fortunate enough to have a cartographer at home who has access to AZ Land Office's land ownership layers. ;)

I'll ask my friend if there are any trails in the area. Her folks own (used to?) a ranch right on the southwest side of the Mustangs.

From the imagery available it looks like there might be a jeep trail going to one of the minor peaks next to Mustang. It would be interesting to know what's down there, for sure!

Well we hiked it on sunday. Great views, lots of fossils up it the rocks near the summit. Took about 45 min to reach the summit from camp. I took the speedwing up on the second hike. Took the express route down, was at the bottom in 1min 20seconds. Check it out-
