Arizona Epic Adventures -Inner Basin Upward-Camp at 11,000ft
Located just north of Flagstaff in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness are the two tallest peaks in Arizona. It is from within this wilderness area, the Humphreys and Agassiz peaks dominate the landscape from their respective heights of 12,637ft and 12,353ft. Needless to say, these are Arizona’s giants. Just below these giants, yet well within the depths of their shadows, is an awesome little saddle that offers absolutely spectacular views of the great state of Arizona. Ok, ok…so the area is not in any constant shadows, but at 11,000ft and being adjacent to the other mountains, we will probably spend at least some time in the shade!
The place I am referring to is Doyle Saddle...(or is it Freemont Saddle?). It is a neat little area, with surprisingly a lot of flat ground to make camp. In fact, the area was once used as a camp (I believe by Weatherford himself), as evidenced by the old rusted Ford Model-T axle and metal oven up at the location. There is evidence of much more recent use of the site as well, as there is a fire ring at the site. I suspect this area does not see a lot of camping use, but being right outside of the inner basin boundary (the no camping zone of the wilderness), this is really quite the idyllic spot…especially with the views!

There are about 57 people currently planning or considering being in the Flagstaff area for HAZfest that weekend. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of them decide to make a day hike on the peaks Saturday, possibly even running into you at the saddle. If your backpacking plan falls through, you should consider joining us at HAZfest. It would be a great chance to meet a bunch of people, and join in on some Flag area hikes at the same time.

Though admittedly some HAZfest attendees might be outside your requirements of not being more than 2 years older than you. I think some of us can still hang in there and have some fun though.

Most of the guys that I used to climb with in Idaho did not start hiking or peak bagging until they were well into their 40's. The strongest guy I ever climbed with is in his late 50's and still putting up new 1000 + foot technical routes that put young guys to shame. Bob Martin did not begin his Arizona climbing career until he was in his early 60's. That's what I like about hiking and peak bagging, age & wisdom still trumps youth.

Did it ever occur to anyone that this is essentially a dating meet up group for those 21 to 35 who like back packing? I don't know what Poochie's story is, but it does not get easier to meet people who are single, attractive, and share your interests as you get older. Maybe in Tempe, I don't know, but certainly not in the places I have lived in the last 10 years. I laughed at a girl in 2003 because she was afraid of not meeting someone suitable to her when we were a year from graduation in Florida. She did. I didn't care. Now I'm in what can at best be described as denial, and at worst loser-dom. So, frankly, your insult at being excluded by age shows a lack of experience in this realm. The board and site is dominated by middle aged and older folks, and so what, they're fine people, but sometimes you need to recognize through your years of experience and wisdom, that certain groups of people might want to get together simply to get together and mingle.

Not necessarily. My sister is single, and a hiker, but she doesn't qualify either.Jim_H wrote:So, frankly, your insult at being excluded by age shows a lack of experience in this realm.

Well, whatever, maybe it could be a singles group, but it's hard for folks of wider age groups to be in singles groups. 40 and 30 is broad enough, 40 and 25 is too wide. 35 and 22 is rather wide, but I didn't make the group.

Re: Arizona Epic Adventures -Inner Basin Upward-Camp at 11,0
It's all kind of a Moot point since this group does not focus on singles....And apparently you can have people of all skill levels on the same Hike.....
So apparently you can be 34 and married and never Hiked before in your life.....This group is for anyone interested in backpacking, camping, hiking, and wilderness adventures. All skill levels are welcome, as I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share and love introducing others to the wilderness. In this group, we will definitely be seeking out the roads less traveled!
This group is intended to be a free-formed, user-driven, laid-back backpacking group. While we will be focusing on backpacking events, we will also have car-camping events and possible intermittent 'other activities' (local get-togethers, music venues, etc.).

Re: Arizona Epic Adventures -Inner Basin Upward-Camp at 11,0
Um, I've been out of town, backpacking of course, and just logged onto this. I'm puzzled. This is a posted HAZ event, I've been a HAZ member for 7 years, but I can't go because I'm too old? Correct me if I'm wrong. I just led a women-only backpack for a women-only meetup group. I don't think that would have gone over so well if I had also posted it as a HAZ event, now would it? So, I didn't post my women-only hike as a HAZ event, simple. No hurt feelings amongst my male friends on HAZ.
I might like to show up to this event, kick some baby butt.

So when is a HAZ event not a HAZ event? When azbackpackr is uninvited.azbackpackr wrote:I might like to show up to this event, kick some baby butt.

If she shows up it would be worth going to just to see the :tt:

I'm probably failing to grasp the larger picture, but... why is the advertised Meetup group being linked to from HAZ!? It seems to violate the guidelines Joe has set out in the HAZ Forum Guidelines (Any link sending participation away is not allowed). Since many of us aren't welcome there, due to our ages, the point is probably moot...
