| no partners | | Somehow, I had to work in a day of hiking in my whirlwind reunion week in the Pacific Northwest. I really wanted to do Mount St. Helens, but I didn't get on that permit thing soon enough, so I had to work something else out. I found out my friend Karen, who I haven't seen for more than 20 years, was quite the hiker and an experienced backpacker. She wanted to come with me. I figured that was perfect - she could be my guide. I never hiked in this area when I lived there. She first suggested Mount Si, but then decided that the views aren't good enough on that hike, and the hike up Mount Dickerman would be perfect.
When we arrived at the trailhead (about two hours northeast of Seattle), it looked like there was some cloud cover at the peak, but it also looked like it might blow away by the time we got up there. The weather pattern for this area had been cloudy in the morning and clear by the afternoon.
The hike was a steep uphill (about 3700 feet of elevation in a little over four miles), but nice, since the ground was so moist I didn't feel the pounding on my soles. There were lots of different types of wildflowers, too. Karen is studying for her PhD in biology, so a better guide could not be had. We even ran into a former student of hers collecting moth samples on the trail!
The views from the top failed to deliver. Karen promised me that on a good day, we could see Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and the Puget Sound from the top, but we could barely see 20 feet in front of us on this day. It was still a great hike, though, with a great friend that I am happy to be reunited with.  We will most certainly go hiking again when I am in the area. |
