Our goal was solitude and we definitely found it (unless you count the wildlife). The first few hundred yards are a bit overgrown with grasses, but don't let it discourage you from continuing. Once you start climbing it will clear up quickly. The brush is definitely filling in the space left after a fire decimated the trees in this area. The natural erosion that occurs after a fire is evident while you make your way up to the rim, and you get wonderful views of the area without obstruction by trees, but it is bitter sweet knowing how beautiful this area was only a short while ago. We found several areas where the trail could use repair (look out for the rebar poking out of the trail... lots of it). I think the Boys Ranch may need a little help maintaining the trail. Once you get to the top you are rewarded with a unique view of the area. We opted to take a lunch break and head back after making our way through the maze of cairns and young trees to a nice little clearing off the trail. We will have to come back and follow this to Knoll lake when we have a bit more time. |
