| no partners | | Great morning for an early start on this trip to Checkmate Arch. I decided to try a westerly approach and loop hike. The unnamed wash providing access around Peak 2461 was fairly clear with only a few spots choked by catclaw. The climb up Peak 2437 provided more challenge than the descent from the peak where the arch sat. After breaking out over the rim of 2437 I crossed a small mesa that provided excellent views in all directions before the final ascent to the ridge overlooking the arch. From the ridge the arch is only visible as a monolithic stone protruding along the northeasterly edge of the rim itself. It was not until I had descended a short distance to the southeast that the form too shape. One note, unless your 4-legged hiking companion is small and easily carried over the many areas of fallen cholla, I recommend that you leave Fido at home for this trip. |
