Thanks to Kats 4WD truck and driving we made this trip to a surprisingly beautiful and multi-featured canyon south of Superior. My last visit was shortly after some of the winter rains and the big bump next to the gate was not navigable by my 2WD drive Tacoma. This time, Silver just rolled on over and we cut a lot of time off the hike by parking at the trail head. That was the difference between making the falls or not given our commitment to others to be done by dark. Thank you Silver
The sign in register was a bit disappointing as it now is full of very official looking forms with almost no place to express yourself. Never the less, a group of two had made some comments on their adult activities at the falls which sounded like fun.
Hiking this canyon is a lot of boulder hopping, bushwhacking, climbing around and occasional wading. There is little trail and almost no useful cairns so our combined route finding paid off in getting up the canyon. I go high and Kat went to the water with about an even split of finding the way The first or second fall had an interesting hole in the rock at about basketball rim height and we were able to amuse ourselves tossing medium rocks for score. Given some cold adult beverages, we probably could have spent a lot of time there playing rock toss. I hauled my rap rope and gear in the hopes that we might be able to get beyond the end waterfall or at a minimum rap past some of the obstacles on the way back. The fall turned out to be a difficult free climb that I was not willing to attempt. We were then hustling to get back out so we didn't attempt any of the raps that were doable thus I get credit for a backpack training hike with the gear. Next time we will head for the slot canyon which requires some technical effort and is much more accessible. |
