Another amazingly beaUTiful Zion canyon and it's been a good 5 years since I last descend this canyon. Way too long! ;) You'd think your B-day canyon would be super lucky and smooth, right? Not exactly... From the tunnel, we walked the highway a bit before heading up the sandy upper Pine Creek and then scrambling up the westside to a saddle to drop into upper Spry Canyon. Zion is SO flipping amazing and the views in there and SO sweet! Upper Spry is fairly sandy with an angled 160ft rappel to start things off. The canyon narrows up a bit with a few short rappels, narrows to bypass or drop in, and some small pools before opening back up again. Then it narrows back up substantially and you begin the final rappel sequence thru the SWEET lower narrows. It starts off with a 90ft rappel into a amazing dark hallway, another 100 footer from a tree bypassing a pool, a 2-staged double pool rappel, to a 50ft fluted rappel down some funky sandstone into a narrow wet hallway thru a chest-high pool, followed by a 100ft rappel into another shallow pool, and finished up by a 60ft sandy rappel. Don't use you're best shiny rappel device or the sandy with chew it up. The price of admission was high for us today with two of our 200ft ropes being corehot :o, one of the gal's hair getting stuck in her ATC on one of those big drops requiring Steve to lower a rope to her from above, and I set that last 60ft rappel about 20ft short ](*,) and required me setting another rope and picking him off and hanging him from my harness as I lowered us to the ground. Whew, glad we got thru there in all one piece. Some boulder hopping brings us to that 90ft overhanging final rappel and then loads more boulder hopping to reach lower Pine Creek with a sidetrip to the falls before heading down canyon to the highway.

Glad to have done this sweet canyon and it's been far too long since my last visit and hopefully my next visit is a little less eventful... :D
