Between health issues and practically rebuilding my Samurai over a month's time I hadn't had a chance to really put My Sammy to the test. So after previous failed attempts with two other vehicles to go through Box Canyon I figured that would be a great start. As it turned out I had neither co-pilot/spotter or any other vehicles to accompany me so I had to make sure I didn't get into any situation I couldn't get out of by myself.

I drove south of AZ 79 toward Florence about 5 miles then headed east into Cottonwood Canyon then swinging south with the intention to go through Martinez Canyon down to the Coke Ovens, back out to the Box Canyon intersection then go south and exit at Florence. But while I prepared well the night before it wasn't until getting into a section with very sharp rock before I realized the bag with all my tools was not in the vehicle. This meant even though I had a high-lift jack along I had nothing to remove lug nuts. So rather than continue hoping I wouldn't cut a tire I turned around and decided to cut that portion of the trip out and head out Box Canyon to Florence.

With all the warnings about how tough the drive through Box Canyon was, I started out very carefully but it wasn't long before I gained enough confidence to cruise along pretty good and whenever there was an obstacle that took some planning before traversing it, I would get out, check for all the hazards then jump back in and just drive over or through it. By the time I came out the south end without so much as one scrape (other than the requisite Arizona pin-stripes on the sides) it felt like a piece of cake, and instead of heading back AZ 79 to home I turned around for the drive back through all the way up to the US 60 just east of Florence Junction.

But this trip I planned on taking a video of the full trip through Box Canyon, stopping the filming every 5 minutes or so to keep the files from getting too large. Other than those breaks there is only one 5 minute section where I was stacking rocks to climb back up the worst "shelf" area that I edited out.

I have videos of the whole day but I'm just posting the one hour drive through Box Canyon from south to north, split into four ~15 minute videos.

I know the temps are climbing by the day but I'll be back out soon to cover the roads I missed.
