When we rounded the last bend before the campgrounds and our eyes landed on Havasu Falls...that's how I felt. I'd done it. We'd made it! Here we were!
For years I'd wanted so badly to visit this lovely legend and hidden paradise. But never was I able until my boyfriend and favorite hiking partner helped plan it!
Since January 2011 we'd been planning to go...go figure the boyfriend breaks his foot 2 weeks before we planned to go..alas, I HAD to go, we had 8 other people joining us...
We drove out of Peoria, AZ around 11pm on June 25th and reached The Hilltop (parking lot!)around 430am!
Slept a sleepless hour in our cars, geared up and headed out! Took us a good 5-6 hours to get to Supai, none of us were awake, I personally hadn't slept in literally 27 hours, what good a 10 mile hike did me! I slept a good hour when we finally reached camp!
Lots of exploring, not too much wildlife, the Reservation Dogs were our best friends the whole weekend.
First day (the 26th) we reached camp, set up, napped, hit Havasu Falls, wandered round, had a lovely lunch then dinner and snuggled half in our bags before the sun went down...EXHAUSTED hahaha I slept like a rock!
Monday dawns...we were up with the sun and ready to go. We wandered to Havasu again, then up to the Village to send some postcards
And then back down with my two girls for a quick excursion to Mooney Falls. The 2 guys had gone ahead and hiked out to The Colorado River when we headed to the Village. Figured we'd all meet up that late in the day. Made it about 1/4 mile from Beaver Falls around 5pm and decided to head back.
Btw, the climb DOWN to Mooney Falls is amazing, the view from the TOP of Mooney Falls is amazing, the story behind Mooney Falls is a classic mining story haha "Drunk Miner plunges to death, falls named after him" Good old Miner Mooney.
Made it to Beaver Falls the following day, I wanted to go on to The Colorado River but part of me had silently promised to save that part of the trip to be experienced only alongside my beloved boyfriend.
The rope mentioned near the solitary palmtree does exist as of this posting and is quite in tact, we did not take that route and wandered downstream. Hoping to take the cliff route next time around!
You know what amazed me the most...the Natives, I asked a few of them and they were born and raised in that tiny village and visit Peach Springs/Williams/Flagstaff etc maybe 2x a month or so for supplies...
I wonder how many of those cars at The Hilltop belong to the Natives?
They were all kind and answered all our questions and I have only good things to say of them. I expected nothing less!!
The water...oh my Darwin...THE WATER! It was chilly and crisp and blue and green and deceptive!
Deceptive you ask? At the bottom of the 200 foot madness that is Mooney falls would you not expect the water to be dozens of feet deep? Umm...well...it LOOKS that way...but me, in all my 5 feet and glory stood IN the fall, literally being blown backward from the force of the madness and yet..I STOOD! Maybe up to my chest at one point but I STOOD...I wouldn't recommend everyone take this risk but I had my feet secured (thanks to my VFFs!)and I was feeling ballsy!
There is, downstream, a nice little pool that was a good 9 feet deep, but it looks maybe 3 feet, the waters are so deceptive!! I carried a 4 foot long stick with me half the hikes to test the depths...btw...there is a rope with a log tied to it before you reach the palmtree and cliff rope...it's only like 2 feet deep...be careful!
So...here I am again, home, in the city...wishing I was still there, in Paradise. What have I taken away from that trip? So much...love for the humans that live there, knowledge of the hidden Paradise, and yearning to return...
but most of all...
I did it. And I'll do it again. Every year until I am physically unable! |
