I had only planned a 4-wheeling loop heading out FR172 to Roger's Trough then taking FR650 back out to the 60 across from Picketpost Mountain. But when I arrived at Roger's Trough with the temperature at only 75 I grabbed my GPS, camera and a 20 oz Gatorade bottle with thoughts of meandering around a bit. When I got as far as the sign for West Pinto trail and not ever having hiked that way I figured why not check it out for a future hike.

Not 100 yards from the sign a large deer jumped up 50 feet ahead of me but I was so unprepared it took me so much time to turn on the camera, set it to video and push the correct button that it had fled. All I got was a blurry big white blotch in the photo. (Yeah, I hit the snap instead of video button.) Oh well, maybe next time.

Well, as usual, I kept going farther, a little more, then a little more until I got up to the saddle and the trail started down the other side. Not prepared to continue much farther, especially climbing back up again later I turned back, took a side trip to a small peak just SE of Iron Mountain for some photos then set off back to Roger's Trough TH. As I neared the same spot where the deer was, there it is a again but this time from the other side there was too much brush in the way. So I walked over that way and found a large nesting area very close to the running creek. Seems like a good place to check for deer next trip. Soon back at the trail head it seemed almost eerie to see only my vehicle in the lot on a great day. Even when I left to continue my 4-wheel loop it was only 82 degrees thanks to a brisk breeze and semi-overcast skies. If I had been better prepared and started a bit earlier I would have done a much longer hike.

Road conditions for FR 172 were great, even a passenger car could have made it out today just being a bit careful in a coupe spots. FR 650 down the other side was also in good shape, albeit not for passenger cars.
