We began our descent on the Tanner Trail Thursday morning, for some reason I thought if any trail would give us trouble it would be Tanner. In my opinion Tanner was pretty straight forward... steep, long, exposed and hot YES... but straight forward none the less. Tanner provided awesome views of the canyon I had not yet seen. Once at the river we worked our way over to Cardenas which was another 3 miles, very hot but flat and easy going. Made camp at Cardenas around 3:00 pm with enough time to cool down, wash up in the river, set up camp and enjoy the evening. Needless to say I must have been spent because I was asleep by 7:00 pm. Next day on to the Escalante. The Escalante in my book is pretty indescribable, beautiful, but by far the toughest trail I have ever done. It took my backpacking partner and I 9 hours to do the 9 or so miles of trail. If you have never done it, but plan to ... be prepared. Parts of the trail were very straight forward but most was very exposed and required what seemed to be never ending boulder hopping/climbing not to mention the elevation gain and loss over the entire stretch (imagine lots of up and down) . Highlights of the Escalante were the descent into Seventy Five Mile Canyon, the climb up out of Papago creek via a cliff wall (bring rope you may need to haul your packs up by rope... we did) and the climb down a huge rock fall. We finally made our way to Camp at Hance Rapids were we met with with another from our group who had come down New Hance and all just as the sun was setting. Saturday we made our way to the Grandview/Horseshoe Mesa via the Tonto Trail. The Tonto began with a bit of rock climbing boulder hopping and I began to wonder if this day was going to be the same as yesterday but before long the Tonto took on its form of straight and fast and before we knew it we were at Hance Creek enjoying some shade before the ascent to Page Springs. After pumping and loading water for the night at Page Springs we headed up (if you've done this you know) the steep and rocky trail to Horseshoe. I was pleasantly surprised at Horseshoe Mesa as I have never been there and had envisioned it to be without any trees or shrubs but it is covered with beautiful Juniper. Sunday, the hike out Grandview as you know, is a steep one, and needless to say I was happy to be out. One awesome incredible trip...will post pics. |
