This was my first time to Reavis Ranch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Joe and I found some apples to munch on that were mighty good. Joe explained our bushwhack today is only 1.5 miles and parts of it are relatively clear. After the Mound Mountain bushwhacking nightmare, this sounds pretty good. Brushy at first giving way to some easy travel, but very little decent. We still had to drop over 1000 ft in less than half a mile through some thick brush. We persevered through it and found ourselves in a desert oasis along Reavis Creek. We worked our way along the creek to the top of Reavis Falls. Spectacular scenery! We made a decision to try to make it out back up the creek rather than bushwhacking back up the steep slope we had come down. Everything was going great. Pools and unusual rock formations one after another. After a while there was more and more climbing to get to the next pool. On several occasions we had to help each other climb up. Finally we reached a spot we could not traverse. We had come a long way to turn back from here and it was already mid afternoon. We decided to try a wicked bushwhack up a steep embankment to a ridge then circle back to the creek further upstream. After an hour and a half we were back in Reavis Creek a couple hundred yards above where we had left it and more than a little tired. To our great pleasure we were able to stay in the creek and worked our way upstream until Joe led a short off trail jaunt back to a real trail. By this time it was already past 4:30 so we skipped any further attractions, pumped some water and finished off the last leg of the hike, the last few miles in the dark. Great hike. Glad to make it back in one piece. Thanks Joe! |
