i've been coming here for four years during this same weekend. i know a family of folks that go to the rodeo/carnival in sells every year and they bring a bunch of their friends. i was one of 19 people that stayed at the campground this year.

i've always dreamed of the one day that i would reach the "lion's" ledge. this year was the closest i got. the bottom of the ledge is a scree slope, and since i was hiking alone (i know - right? 18 other people and none of them could manage to start a hike by 10 a.m.?), i wouldn't attempt it without another. maybe next year...

the road to the western approach was a little worse than it was in previous years. it made me super happy that i had the jeep. another thing that was different than previously was that this year was the first year i've seen ANY wildflowers at this time of year. it was amazing to see out there! the early rains and warm january made it ripe for the flowers. and you all know how i love the flowers.

i hiked up the trail, and noticed an illegal trail on the way up, slightly above where you enter the treed area - it was so well traveled that i questioned the way up. this is where i took the chonies shot. but amazingly enough, i didn't see any other trash. when i was headed back down, i noticed two of my camping compadres at the top of one of the nearby rocks. i bushwhacked my way over there, but when we were making the descent, we went the way they went - on one of the illegal routes (the one with the chonies!). this route was amazing! very well maintained. we made it back down to the "normal" route down, and it was smooth sailing. it was an amazing day. the mountain is sacred to the tohono o'odham, and it's not hard to see why.
