One of my many POI's marked for my Salton Sea weekend was the volcanic mud pots.

The first day after getting into some lunch and town trouble, we headed down the dirt roads towards the mud. There were two other people there when we arrived. They eagerly asked if we were geologists too. If our laughable "No" didn't convince them, the last time they saw us surely did.

We goofed around a bit, poked at a few bubbles and listened to the ground breathing all around us (which sounded a bit like being in the middle of a field full of randy horses). The duo with the instruments pointed out their thermal findings which varied between 120 and 160 degrees. We had our fill of photos and then drove towards the sea. Almost there, I said "Stop the car. Hear me out, I have an idea...." Apparently that's how most of my pitches begin, but they were used to it and listened and we were soon headed back to the mud field.

The scientist peoples were still at it but we strode past them to one of the larger ground openings of the 120-130deg variety, stripped down, and began to get hot and dirty.
After a good coating, we took a few manly pics then strode all Frankensteiny-like back to the vehicle as the mud hardened. The Sciencers were packing up their supplies unknowing of our approach, or maybe we just blended really well, but when they finally spotted us, the Sciencess hurriedly grabbed her camera and asked if she could take our photo (presumably to study back at the lab). As she snapped away, she asked all motherly, "Now how are you boys going to get into that car and where are you going to clean off at?" And I said what I usually reply with at the end of all our big ideas "Ma'am we didn't really think this that far through."

We did end up being able to hop back in the car once our Gray had lightened to a chalky color, and drove over to the shore where we had the choice of cleaning off standing in the foot of murky green water while sunken in 10" of mud, or laying in the 10" of water on top of the rocks and fish bones. I chose the shallower more pokey option because mud's just gross.
