On the way up the Babe Haught Trail, I heard what I think were elk calling from below in one of the canyons east of the trail. It called about 4 or 5 times. By the last time, it sounded farther away like it had moved up the canyon. I looked but didn't spot anything. I also saw some kind of hawk flying below for me for a second. Didn't get a second chance for a photo.
Knoll Lake was predictably busy with campers, boaters, fishers, etc. The trail on the east side of the lake is more of a trail than on the west side, but this is still a really nice hike. Temps up there were mid-70's and nice and breezy. During the bushwhack across the southern end of the lake I came across some kind of Blair Witchy thing that resembled a grave. The rocks were stacked like the walls of a coffin except for one open end and bark was laid across the top. I've posted 2 photos. Probably one of the weirder things I've seen in the wilderness.
The hike back down was nice. The temps stayed in the mid 80s. It's really amazing how different the Rim looks in the morning and the afternoon. |
