| no partners | | I parked at the Bloody Basin Rd. outhouse about a mile past the Agua Fria crossing. I walked up the hill and across the mesa to the edge of Baby Canyon and immediately saw pottery shards, petroglyphs and some signs of ruins (low walls). I continued east along the rim sort of zig zagging between the crest (where ruins and shards are most likely) and the outcroppings below where petroglyphs might be hiding. I ran across two fairly substantial ruins on the north side.
The last ruin was above a cliff band so I continued further east until there was a decent route down into the canyon. Heading downstream through the sand, bushes, boulders, and occasional puddle, I eventually headed up the steep south side canyon wall toward where I expected one of the major Baby Canyon ruins. By luck my path took me past petroglyphs and right to the ruin. From this substantial ruin (bigger than the ones on the other side) I continued west along the rim to the other major ruin. Its location is different than the others, perched on a little hill overlooking the canyon like a castle. Almost the entire hilltop was covered with ruined stone walls. There were a lot of petroglyphs on the cliff band below though they were mainly faded. I suspect I missed a lot of the rock art in this area.
From this last ruin I angled back down the hill to the canyon bottom and passed quite a few big puddles on the way to the Agua Fria river intersection. I headed up the (mainly sandy) river until I caught the drainage shortcut back to my car. |
