Karuizawa is home to Mt. Asama, the largest active volcano in Japan. This mountainous area is quite sacred to the Japanese for many reasons, Asama san being one of them. It also has many interconnecting trails, some hundreds of years old. Some of these trails are part of the Buddhist shrine holy pilgrimage. Karuizawa is also the summer home of the Ono family. Yoko and John Lennon spent quite abit of time there. The town has many summer homes of the Japanese business elite as well as the Shogunate homes. The best part is that gaijin are really rare there since it's not on the tourist radar. |
